Apply Real-Life Mathematics Skills at St. Matthew’s Annual Math Expo
Hillsboro, Ore. (April 11, 2016) – Real-life application of mathematics is essential for student engagement in the middle school grades. Often, students can be heard asking "When will we ever use this?" In an attempt to provide a concrete answer to this and other questions regarding true-life situations, the sixth and seventh grade classes are hosting and participating in a Math Expo to be held in the St. Matthew Parish Hall on Friday, 4/22 from 9:30am to 10:30am, and Friday 4/29 from 10:30am-11:30am.
In the school year’s second trimester, the St. Matthew sixth grade class has been studying percentages, ratios and rate of change as part of a unit on numbers and operations, and probability. The real-life application that they have chosen to exemplify these concepts is a mock New York Stock Exchange. On Friday 4/22, from 9:30-10:30am, the sixth graders will be hosting their version of the trading floor. All guests will receive "money" to purchase stocks while learning about investments.
As part of their geometry and measurement unit, the seventh grade class at St. Matthew has been working on scale models and drawings, and decomposing 3D shapes into their 2D parts. The real-life application that they have chosen to highlight these skills is an Architecture and Design Expo. On Friday, 4/29, from 10:30-11:30am, guests will have the opportunity to view blue prints and take virtual tours of residential homes created exclusively by the students.
All members of the community are welcome to attend. Please stop by to support the students, have fun interacting with the kids, and learn about how mathematics serves us in our daily lives.
